What is 3D Printing?
3D Printing is part of a process known as additive manufacturing where an object is created by adding a material layer by layer. The process begins with the creation of a 3D digital model which is then sliced into layers using specialist computer software. The digital layers are converted by the 3D printer to build up the physical 3D model which can then be processed to achieve the desired finish.
There are different types of 3D printing technology that can build up the layers of a 3D model and they fall into 7 separate categories each with its own characteristics. When looking at a project we can assess which one is best suited for your desired outcome.
Material Extrusion (FDM): Material is selectively dispensed through a nozzle.
Vat Polymerization (SLA & DLP): Liquid photopolymer in a vat is selectively cured by UV light.
Powder Bed Fusion (SLS, DMLS & SLM): A high-energy source selectively fuses powder particles.
Material Jetting (MJ): Droplets of material are selectively deposited and cured.
Binder Jetting (BJ): Liquid bonding agent selectively binds regions of a powder bed.
Direct Energy Deposition (LENS, LBMD): A high-energy source fuses material as it is deposited.
Sheet Lamination (LOM, UAM): Sheets of material are bonded and formed layer-by-layer.
We have experience of printing in FDM in both PLA and ABS plastics as well as SLA, MJ and BJ printing as listed above.
At MDLMKR we use 3D printing as a digital tool alongside our other specialist equipment and machinery. We have found it particularly useful for generating complex or repetitive shapes and forms or for architectural details that would be time-consuming and inefficient to make in other ways. Combining the many benefits of this innovative technology with our traditional making techniques helps us to be efficient and price competitive for our clients.
