Architectural Models

A model for all stages of the design process

Marketing Models

Our marketing models are typically used to showcase a building to generate preconstruction sales revenue and are often found in marketing suites and selling agents’ premises.

They are typically constructed at larger scales of 1:150 and above with a high level of detail showing brick and stonework layout, window frames, mullions, external balustrades, capping, gutters, etc. Realistic colour-matched spray finishes and textures can be applied to give a true sense of how the building will appear when completed.  External areas are detailed showing paving layouts, planters, seating, and other street furniture with soft landscaping and trees to compliment the model’s appearance.

Masterplan Models

Masterplan models are commonly used to compliment outline and detailed planning applications, for engagement with local authorities, stakeholders, and for public consultations.

This type of model details a project in its wider urban context and is commonly constructed around 1:1000 scale. They show how large-scale developments sit within the wider built environment and how they connect back to existing infrastructure.  Buildings are usually presented in block format detailing any roof pitches with the proposed scheme presented to look subtly different from the rest of the model.

Competition Models

Competition models can have a huge impact in helping you secure a lucrative project or contract.

They are usually a chance to experiment with materials and finishes to celebrate a project in all its glory.  Our involvement is key to helping you explore material choices that can vary from concrete to cork and everything in between.  Illumination is often used to showcase a project using a light plate underneath the model, which can be colour-changing for additional impact. Please refer to the Illumination section for further information about lighting models.

Monochrome Models

Sometimes described as white models, these models are a powerful tool to engage the viewer in the overall concept for a project and how it sits within its context.

They are typically used to describe a building or project ahead of any decision-making about materials, colours, or textures.

Timber Models

We have seen a resurgence in demand for timber models over the past decade.  Natural wood grain has a unique visual and tactile appearance which works well for presenting buildings in sensitive areas, sites of significance, or showcasing historical buildings with unique architectural detailing.

Timber species have their own individual characteristics. For modelmaking, the use of lime wood is popular for massing blocks which can then have layers of veneer applied to build up the architectural content of an elevation. A variety of timber veneers are commonly used in architectural model making including birch, beech, maple, walnut, and oak.

Sketch Models

Sketch models are an important way to capture early design ideas about a project.

Using affordable materials such as card, foam board, or paper they are quick to manufacture, appear less finished than other types of models and form the basis from which further developments can take place.

We can work remotely with your team throughout the duration of a design session or review and capture their design thoughts in a series of physical models. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

Design Development

Our design development models are an excellent way to record creative thinking as your project goes through its design evolution.

They often start off as simple block massing models. As a design progresses, details such as façades, internal floors, building cores, and an indication of the internal wall layouts evolve in the model.

Sectional Models

Sectional models allow the viewer to imagine themselves inside a building and in some cases to observe what the views out from might look like to offer an engaging experience.

Usually constructed to around 1:50 scale they form a slice through a building to reveal the internal details such as floors, columns, stairs, atria, and cores. Section lines usually work well in a vertical plane but much depends on what the model is revealing about the design or building.

Façade Models

Façade models are a great way to describe and detail building elevations. They are often made in materials that will communicate what the final building elevation will look like when constructed.

Models with fully glazed facades can reveal how the floor plate is structured behind the glazing with some notion of the internal wall layouts. Other types of façade models will consist of solid blocks with layers of materials applied over to articulate the architectural content of an elevation, such as setbacks to the glazing level.

Detail Models

Detail models can be invaluable when testing the aesthetics of building components at large scales prior to site construction. At 1:1 scale they are a powerful tool to communicate design intent.

Interior Models

This type of model allows the viewer to experience how the interior design, fittings, finishes, and furniture might appear when the building is completed.

They are often rich with colours and textures and animated with figures to give as true an indication of the finished interior as possible.

Topographical Models

These models can be invaluable when working on projects in areas with challenging or remote terrain, where it is difficult to understand land conditions, or where a site boundary is spread out over a large area. Used at all stages of the design process they usually have an impressive visual presence.

Add those finishing touches

Illumination

Lighting is a great way to showcase your project and draw the viewer in to engage with your building designs.

An LED light plate can be mounted below the model or inside the internal core of the building to provide an overall aesthetically pleasing glow.  Marketing models sometimes have an apartment finder illumination system controlled via a keypad or tablet allowing the user to switch on a lighting effect at a specific location in the building.  Spot illumination can be generated with fibre optic lighting to provide a contrasting effect across a model.

Display Plinths

Plinths are a great way to present your finished model base for display to the viewer as a stand-alone exhibit.

Built from MDF and finished in a range of materials they are designed to accommodate the shape of the model and can be collapsible for transport or storage.  We can incorporate storage for sales brochures or shelves for additional display material and always advocate utilising the sides of the plinth to display corporate branding and graphics.

Protective Covers

Our covers protect your model from debris, damage, and unwanted handling.

We always suggest utilising a presentation cover for events with the public as they are a small price to pay to protect your investment. In the past, we have encountered models without cases being used as ‘drinks stands’ at busy functions.

Presentation Cases

Our bespoke presentation cases are an excellent way to control the big reveal of your project or where you have several design options to present.

The context model will usually sit in the top half of the case and include a predefined area in the topography where components can plug in and out. Design options can be safely stored at the bottom of the case out of sight of the viewer, and then used for discussion in sequence in a presentation.

Transport Cases

Our transport cases are made bespoke to fit your model and are designed to provide maximum protection whilst in transit. They are manufactured from plywood with a lightweight board bonded to the surface and are finished with aluminum framing, fixings, catches, and handles. They have custom foam inserts designed for protection and large cases will have robust wheels or sliders to assist moving and staking for transportation.

Photography

We can organise photography of your finished model using our own digital equipment or with our network of professional photographers in their studios. For planning, we can video capture your model for inclusion in your online public consultation exhibition.

A personal service

Cleaning & Maintenance

Experience tells us that from time to time your model may require some care or maintenance.

This could be as straightforward as a complete dust down and clean, a refresh of tired landscaping and trees, or repair to any damages.  In most situations, we can carry out any maintenance tasks on-site and can provide a regular care package for your model if needed. We are happy to work with architectural models that we have not constructed so please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Delivery & Installation

We have a wealth of experience delivering and setting up models within the UK and abroad.

Whether at an exhibition, racecourse or on a ferry we can accommodate any requirements.  For international shipping, we use a trusted industry partner and can meet your model at the location for set up prior to your event before repacking safely back to the UK.  In the past we have hand-delivered and flown out to repair models in Europe, worked in the Middle East as far north as Azerbaijan, and shipped models around the globe to international industry events.
