MDLMKR draws on over 20 years of experience translating creative visions into physical scale models for architectural practices. Our experience of working in-house at a large international practice and directly alongside architectural teams makes us unique in the model-making industry.

We have a comprehensive understanding of the building design process and have developed a skill set that allows us to respond accordingly when design developments occur during the process of a model build. Our passion for design and the creative process of making drives our attention to detail. We are experts at combining traditional handcrafting techniques with the latest digital technologies to be resource-efficient and price competitive. Our reputation is important to us and we are proud of maintaining exacting standards of model making and client relationships. This care and attention with all the details throughout the making process make us what we are.

Our Process

Communication is at the heart of our process and we pride ourselves on working collaboratively with our clients to capture their creative thoughts & visions.  This carries unique responsibility and so embedded into our ethos is the necessity to listen, understand and capture the narrative of a project.  Only when we have done this can we respond with a unique design proposal for a physical model.  In this way, every model is bespoke and designed to capture and celebrate our client’s visions in a creative and engaging way.

About me

As far back as I can remember I have always made models.  My early years were spent with Lego and Meccano inventing and testing ideas in a continuous cycle of build, break, and remake. The enjoyment of making and the process of design carried all the way through my education culminating in a product design degree underpinned by many lost hours of creativity in the university workshops. This translation of creative thought expressed through 3D physical objects was always, and remains to this day, a powerful form of expression for me.

My journey into model-making as a career began over 20 years ago making models for The Mackintosh School of Architecture. After moving to Manchester in early 2000 I secured a first model commission for Ian Simpson Architects before briefly working freelance for Static models in Liverpool.  From here I took up employment with Broadway Malyan and spent an amazing 20 years developing my model-making skills, evolving the workshop, and immersing myself in the building design process. This time afforded me the opportunity to collaborate, design, and construct hundreds of models for projects across the UK and internationally helping secure 100s of millions of pounds worth of projects. Career highlights also include exhibiting at the Royal College summer exhibition, at MIPIM for the Department of Trade & Industry stand, and having photographs of project models published in RIBA Journals.

In late 2020 I stepped out of commercial practice to set up my own independent model making venture, MDLMKR Limited, offering my creative making experience and services across the wider architectural profession, and to construction and creative industry professionals who share my passion for the translation of creative thought through the making of physical models.
